The flying jacket was designed for unheated cockpits, and every part of it exists to close a gap. Shearling at the collar to seal the neck, shearling at the cuffs to seal the wrists, shearling along the hem, and a belt across the waist to stop air moving up inside.
All four are here and the proportions have been pulled in tight - the body is cropped well above the hip, the sleeves are cut close, and the belt buckles across a band rather than threading through loops. Two zipped pockets sit at the chest, angled slightly, and the front closes with a single heavy zip.
It is a piece of equipment that stopped being equipment about seventy years ago and has not lost anything in the transition.
